40

I turned 40 at the end of December and in the run up I’m fairly certain my husband thought I was having some kind of mid-life crisis.

“I HATE MY HAIR I’M GOING TO CUT IT ALL OFF”

“OK darling”

*cuts hair*

“I STILL HATE MY HAIR. I’M GOING TO GET HIGHLIGHTS AND GO BLONDE AGAIN… OR OMBRÉ… OR BALAYAGE OR WHATEVER THE F*** IT’S CALLED”

“OK darling”

“I’m going back on a diet, I don’t know what I was thinking as clearly I’m the size of a whale… and I’m going to whiten my teeth and tint my eyebrows and perm my eyelashes… and get my nails done and buy all new clothes because I hate everything I own… I’m going to order one of those NUTRIBULLETS”

“OK darling”

It’s in the these moments of self loathing madness that my husband reminds me of the husband from “Motherland”. The one that keeps a safe distance and just says “I support you darling” without ever actually doing anything. Although for God’s sake don’t tell him I said this.

But let’s be honest it’s not up to him to deal with any of these flights of fancy that grip me from time to time. He just sees it coming and has the good sense to stay out of the way.

I think ultimately it probably boils down to thinking somehow things would be different when I got to 40. That I’d be different. That I’d be a more polished, more grown up version of myself. That I’d have suddenly turned into the perfect person I was always meant to be. But of course I am still me.

I was thoroughly spoilt on my birthday by family and friends. I received flowers and gifts and cards in abundance. I am always blown away that people take time out of their Christmas celebrations to remember me.

One of my presents was in fact the aforementioned Nutribullet, complete with recipe book, so I am going to have to master the smoothie.

Here’s one I made earlier!

  • This smoothie recipe makes one serving in the Nutribullet which I think makes enough for two drinks comfortably
  • 1 handful of frozen raspberries
  • 1 handful of frozen strawberries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • Half an avocado
  • Apple Juice to the Max Line

Not the most exciting of smoothies to start with but super fruity and refreshing! And managing to get my daughter to “drink” an avocado is a miracle in itself (she has no idea).

So expect some recipes to appear on this blog. But don’t worry I’m still me so there’ll always be more cookie recipes.

  1. Hey! Fantastic article! I appreciate how you outlined %BT%.
Could you give some bits of advice with regards to ways to cultivate
writing talents? I am bad as a writer and it’s especially troublesome because teachers in our college continually
provide us with composing projects. Because of it I made the decision to get an essay from paper writing websites.
In order to evade scam, I’ve discovered good review website, that
you can go to by clicking on this website link
bit.ly. Due to it, I was capable to found a trustworthy composing company.
